BC Association of Fire Chaplains’ Code of Conduct
I accept the following Code of Conduct and in no way will I conduct myself in a manner which conflicts or criticizes these principles.
By applying for and/or renewing my membership I will adhere to this Code of Conduct.
- Chaplains will hold in trust the traditions and practices of their personal faith tradition.
- Although the BC Association of Fire Chaplains is founded on Judeo/Christian ethics and beliefs, Chaplains will work with representatives of all faith traditions when called upon to do so.
- Chaplains will respect the practices and beliefs of each chaplain they supervise, and exercise care not to require of them any service or practice that would be in violation of the faith practices of their particular religious tradition.
- Chaplains will carefully adhere to whatever direction may be conveyed to them by their endorsing body for maintenance of their endorsement.
- Chaplains understand that they will function in a pluralistic environment to provide care to all emergency service personnel and the families entrusted to them.
- Chaplains will respect the beliefs and traditions of all people for whom they care.
- Chaplains shall maintain good spiritual, physical, and relational habits.
- Chaplains will defend those in their care against unfair discrimination based on gender, race, religion, or national/cultural origin.
- Chaplains will hold in confidence any privileged communication received by them during the conduct of their duty. Chaplains will not disclose confidential communications in private or in public.
- Chaplains will guard the identities of those served in any consultations, presentations, or publications unless the person served (or their family if the person cannot give consent) has given them written permission for disclosure.
- Chaplains recognize the special power afforded to them by their office. Chaplains will never use the power in ways that violate the personhood of another human being, religiously, emotionally, or sexually. Chaplains will use their office only for that which is best for the persons under their care.
- Chaplains will pursue ongoing personal growth and professional development in all areas which enhance their spiritual and professional proficiency.
- Chaplains shall make referrals or obtain consultations when in the best interests of those served and shall maintain interdisciplinary relationships to foster these practices.
- Chaplains will support, mentor, encourage, assist, and use all reasonable means to ensure that individuals in need have their needs met.
- Chaplains will exercise professionalism, competence, respect, and loyalty while performing all duties associated with the BC Association of Fire Chaplains.
- Chaplains will represent the BC Association of Fire Chaplains with the highest regard for professionalism in all situations when interacting, working with, and assisting the public through the course of their duties.
- Chaplains will live and represent a life that is filled with integrity, honesty, and professionalism at all times.
